Botox Cosmetic® is a purified toxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. They are acetylcholine release inhibitors and neuromuscular blocking agents. The injection of a very small amount of Botox Cosmetic® into specific muscle(s) causes weakness or paralysis of the specific muscle(s). This results in the relaxation of the muscle and improvement of the lines or wrinkles that the muscle action has formed. The duration of muscle paralysis generally lasts for approximately three to four months.
Botox Cosmetic® has been FDA-approved for the cosmetic treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines (vertical creases between the eyebrows) and moderate to severe lateral canthal lines, known as crow’s feet. Other areas of the face and body such as smoker’s lines around the lips and neck bands may be treated in an “off label” fashion.
Botox Cosmetic® injections are customized for every patient, depending on the patient’s particular needs. These can be performed in areas involving the eyelid region, forehead, and neck. Botox Cosmetic® cannot stop the process of aging. The injections can, however, temporarily diminish the appearance of wrinkles caused by muscle groups.
Botox Cosmetic® injections may be performed as a singular procedure or as an adjunct to another procedure. These injections are best at treating dynamic facial lines, those caused by facial muscle activity. Lines present at rest may or may not improve.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Neuromuscular Disorders: Patients with peripheral motor neuropathic disorders (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and motor neuropathies) may be at greater risk of clinically significant side effects from Botox Cosmetic®.
Pregnancy and Nursing Mothers: Animal reproduction studies have not been performed to determine if Botox Cosmetic® could cause fetal harm. Because it is not known if Botox Cosmetic® can be excreted in human milk, it is recommended that pregnant women or nursing mothers NOT receive Botox Cosmetic® treatments.
Allergic Potential: Botox Cosmetic® contain albumin from human blood, to which certain individuals are allergic. If you have had adverse reactions to certain immunizations or are allergic to eggs, you should not use Botox.
